PATMA Tournament Rules
PATMA competition rules are based upon the World Karate Federation Competition Rules, Version 5.5, approved March 2009. The following modifications have been adopted.
Kata
-
Competitors may perform any kata. In the case of a tie breaker, with the exception of beginners, a different kata must be performed.
- Kata scores will be based upon a point system.
a. Beginners and Novice score range is 5.0-6.99
b. Intermediate score range is 6.0-7.99
c. Advanced score range is 7.0-8.99 - To compete in the black belt kata divisions 73 & 81, a person must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
- Juniors and Adults may compete in only one division of kata.
Kumite
- Junior divisions will run a maximum of 1½ minutes, stop time, with an 8 point maximum.
- Juniors ages 17 & under, Beginner, Novice, and Intermediate, must exercise contact control to the head. Head contact will be penalized.
- Juniors ages 15-17 Advanced may score with skin touch contact kicks to the head. Hand contact to the head will not score and maybe penalized.
- Adult kumite divisions, except for the WKF divisions, will run a maximum of 2 minutes, stop time, with an 8 point ceiling.
- Adult kumite division competitors must be at least 18 years of age.
- Adult divisions, Beginner, Novice, and Intermediate, must exercise contact control to the head. Hand contact to the head will be penalized.
- WKF rules will apply for adult Advance divisions for 18 years and older.
- Juniors and Adults may compete in only one division of kumite.
- Required equipment—Mouth guard, hand protectors, and males groin cup. Other equipment, head, chest, foot, shin protectors are optional.
Kobudo
- All weapons will be subject to inspection by judges or Referee Council designee before competition.
- Modified weapons or weapons that do not meet tournament criteria may not be used.
- Bo’s for adults must measure 6 feet and weight at least 900 grams. If the Bo is less than 6 feet for a junior, it must be the person’s height or over the head. A Bo diameter must be no less than 7/8″ straight, not tapered.
- All Bos must be of hard wood.
- Weapons must remain in the competitor’s hands at all times. Loss of control will result in disqualification.
- Weapons allowed are
a. Long-Bo, Eku, Jo
b. Short-Sai, Tonfa, Kama
Division Skill Levels

PATMA Annual Award Categories
Winners are selected by the accumulation of points in kata, kumite, and one Kobudo division and in the case of Overall Winners with Board of Directors approval.

Competing in a Beginner, Novice, or Intermediate division one year requires an individual to compete at the next higher skill level the following year.
